Key tips for burglary protection

A while ago, I had a conversation with one of our locksmith customers. He came in to buy some tools and told me about an incident he had experienced just a few weeks earlier: An elderly couple near Bonn was convinced that their high-quality locking cylinder was more than enough. They firmly believed, “No one’s getting in here,” and “There’s nothing worth stealing anyway.”

That only happens to other people …

With endless patience, our customer tried to explain to them that leaving tilted windows open while they’re away isn’t a great idea – even with a high-end lock. Unfortunately, they had to learn that lesson the hard way: three weeks later, burglars pried open the window with a basic screwdriver – and walked straight into the living room. Turns out, there was plenty worth stealing after all. Speaking from personal experience, I can tell you: a home burglary is far more than “just” the loss of valuable items. What’s worse is the fact that a complete stranger has violated your most personal, supposedly safe space. That kind of intrusion doesn’t just shatter your sense of security – it leaves behind a deep feeling of unease and fear. What’s left behind isn’t just property damage, but a sense of helplessness and mistrust. It took me a very long time to truly feel safe and comfortable in my own home again. This case clearly shows how deceptive a false sense of security can be – especially when it’s based on common myths. From our perspective as a manufacturer of lock tools, it’s high time we debunk those misconceptions and focus on the real security risks. That’s exactly what this article aims to do – not with theory, but with insights grounded in real-world experience.

Myth 1: “A good lock is all you need”

Sure, a good lock is important – but it’s only one piece of the puzzle. Many people underestimate the fact that burglars often focus on surrounding weak points: poorly anchored fittings, outdated door frames, or windows that can be pried open in seconds with a simple screwdriver. What really helps: Effective burglary protection starts with a full-system approach. A professional security assessment can reveal vulnerabilities that most people wouldn’t notice. Modern protection concepts combine physical security measures (like certified cylinders, reinforced fittings, and mushroom-head locking mechanisms) with visual deterrents (like motion-activated lights and security cameras).

Myth 2: “Alarm systems always scare them off”

Many people rely entirely on their alarm system – and are shocked when a break-in still occurs. The mistake is putting all your trust in it. Alarm systems are important – but they usually only sound *after* someone is already inside. And that’s exactly what you want to prevent. What really helps: Secure the entry points mechanically first, then add electronic protection. A door that doesn’t open in the first place doesn’t need a siren. And if you’re investing in an alarm system, make sure it’s high-quality and professionally installed. Cheap systems with weak Wi-Fi or faulty sensors can create more risk than protection. By the time the police show up a second time for a false alarm, the bill alone might make your head spin.

Myth 3: “Burglars strike at night and use lock picks”

Thanks, Hollywood. Most break-ins actually happen during the day – between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., when no one’s home. And instead of using sophisticated lockpicking tools, burglars usually rely on screwdrivers, crowbars, or the simplest method of all: an open window. What really helps: Break everyday routines. Always close your windows – even if you’re only stepping out for a few minutes. Get neighbors involved, alert delivery drivers, and stay aware: most burglars aren’t coming with snap tools or pulling bells, but with simple prying tools and brute force.

Myth 4: “If they want in, they’ll get in anyway”

This mindset is unfortunately very common – and dangerous. It leads to resignation instead of prevention. Yes, there’s no such thing as 100% security. But most burglars give up if they can’t get in quickly. Studies show: if they don’t succeed within 3 to 5 minutes, many abandon the attempt (Source: ojp.gov – Police Initiative). What really helps: This is exactly where good security technology makes a difference – by buying you time. If you deny the burglar quick access, you’ve already won.

Personal Experience: When Prevention Suddenly Becomes Visible

Once you’ve upgraded your home with reinforced doors, better window locks, or other protective measures, you’ve already made great progress. But what often happens in people’s minds is all too human: time passes. Years go by – fortunately without any incidents. And at some point, you start wondering: “Was that really necessary? Nothing ever happens around here …” Until one day, clear signs of an attempted break-in appear on your front door or a window. The intruders failed, the hardware held firm – and the break-in remained just an attempt. At that moment, you realize how valuable every single one of those security upgrades really was. I remember my neighbor experiencing exactly that. Eight months after securing his home, he stood at his door with the police. Someone had tried to break in – unsuccessfully. No alarm, no damage. The burglars were stopped cold by the hardware. For me, that was a key moment – because it proves that prevention is not just theory. It works.

My Conclusion: Security Isn’t a Myth – It’s Achievable

If you want to protect yourself from break-ins, you don’t need to panic – you need a realistic understanding. Myths create illusions, not safety. The good news is: real solutions exist. And they work – if you know what really matters.

Wichtige Punkte zum Einbruchschutz

How effective are visible security measures like cameras or motion detectors?

Visible equipment has a strong deterrent effect. Burglars look for the easiest target. If they spot cameras, motion detectors, or clearly visible secondary locks, the perceived risk increases – and they often move on.

Are smart home systems really secure?

Not always. Many low-cost systems are vulnerable to cyberattacks or technical failures. Make sure to use encrypted communication, certified systems, and perform regular updates. Still, mechanical protection remains the foundation of any solid burglary defense.

How effective is safety glass or burglar-resistant glazing?

Very effective. Burglar-resistant windows (with a minimum rating of RC2) make break-ins significantly more difficult. The ideal setup combines these with lockable window handles and mushroom-head locking mechanisms.

Are there financial incentives for burglary protection?

Yes. In Germany, for example, the KfW (Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau) offers grants or low-interest loans for burglary protection upgrades – especially retrofits. Installation must be performed by certified professionals. For other countries, check with your local authorities for available support programs.

What should renters consider if they want to upgrade security?

Always check with your landlord first. Small additions like peepholes or secondary locks are usually allowed. Larger upgrades typically require permission. Good alternatives include mobile alarm systems or door bars that don’t require permanent installation.

How do burglars behave when someone is home?

In most cases, burglars avoid any confrontation. The majority want no contact with residents. If it does happen: never confront them — retreat immediately and call the police. Also important: avoid predictable routines. Light timers can help simulate presence.

How can I protect my vacation home or weekend house?

These types of properties are particularly vulnerable. Solid mechanical security, modern smart alarm systems, and regular checkups by neighbors or security services are essential. Extra protection: security films and lockable shutters.

How does burglary protection affect insurance?

Improved security usually has a positive impact. Many insurers reward upgraded systems with premium discounts or extended coverage. But be careful: violating specified security requirements can result in reduced payouts if a claim is filed.

Are there common mistakes when installing security devices?

Unfortunately, yes. Frequent issues include installing cameras at the wrong height, loose mounting of secondary locks, or forgetting side entrances like basement or back doors. A well-planned, comprehensive setup — ideally designed by professionals — is always recommended.

What can I do regularly to stay safe?

Security starts with daily habits. A simple checklist every 3–6 months helps:
• Are locks and reinforcements working properly?
• Are window handles lockable and firmly attached?
• Has the alarm system been tested?
• Are motion detectors properly aligned?
• Are nameplates and mailboxes labeled neutrally (no signs of a single-person household)?
This kind of simple prevention can go a long way.
